In Plumbing: My upstairs bathroom toilet bubbles like a geyser when flushed (very annoying). Can you help?

The chances are that there is something lodged in the trap inside the toilet. Plunging may help but you will probably need to remove the toilet and try dislodging whatever it is. Sometimes it is impossible to remove an object that is wedged in very tight. If thsi is the case replacement is required. I can also suggest checking the drainline for a blockage. Hope this helps.

In Moving: How long should I wait to book my move?

Don’t wait!! It will never hurt to plan in advance (I recommend 2 months). The best moves are the ones that are planned. Put it this way, you’re not going to save any money by calling a company today for a move tomorrow. If anything, you’ll end up paying more.

In Moving: What happen if an item is damaged?

Great question, but rarely discussed in length. There are 2 different types of protection that moving companies offer. The 1st one is Released Protection and most companies will give it for free. What most companies will not tell you is they are not allowed to charge for this one. That is why they call it the Basic Carrier’s Liability which equates to $0.60 per lb per article.

The second one is called Replacement Protection or FVRP. This is an item you purchase, like your Car or Homeowners Protection. If a piece of furniture is damaged it will be fixed, if it cannot be fixed it has to be replaced with a like item from today’s market. (Exclusions are jewellery, coins, documents of value, watches, etc.., we can supply a list if needed).

To put it in perspective, if you are planning to move your brand new $1,200.00 flat screen TV (please keep the box) keep this in mind: Under the 1st Released Protection you will be covered for $60.00 if it weighs 100 lbs. Under the 2nd FVRP the moving company has to fix it or have it replaced (same make and model).

Your moving consultant will explain all the details and choices available.

Thank you for your question and checking out KoolFM's website. Your question is great but it something I too would have to search for. I had a quick look myself for you and without finding a definite answer and taking away time from my real estate clients. I would say at least 20,000 feet. The other option for you is to call an airport or a balloon company.
If any of our other reads can help with this answer, it would be greatly appreciated.

In Insurance: Hi, My car was vandalised and written off now my insurance company are suing me for the premium which I canceled after the car was written off is this legal?

Hi there,

Thank you for your question.

This is a tough one to answer without knowing more details.

My initial thought is that you may owe the insurance company for what we call 'time on risk'. If your policy was in force from January 1 and was cancelled on January 31, you would owe payment for 31 days worth of coverage, plus a short rate cancellation fee. Typically if you cancel your policy at any point during the policy term, it will cost you approximately one month more. This is just a quick and rough estimation. Your insurance company will have a short rate cancellation table that would tell you exactly what percentage of the premium you owe for the number of days the policy was in force.

I would be able to give you a much more accurate answer by knowing your policy details and payment history. Your independent insurance broker should be able to obtain that information for you.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Kind Regards,

~ Chris

In Jewelry: I have a lot of old jewelry in my jewelry box, is it possible to re design it to something I would actually wear?

Yes, we can. We have had great success in helping clients find joy and pleasure from old jewelry. Whether you want to just have a new setting, or bring us in a picture and change the piece completely. We have talented goldsmiths that will help you create something unique just for you. This is also helpful if you have a bracelet and just need it to be a bit longer, or if you want to design a piece of jewelry to remind you of a person or experience.

In Jewelry: Can you actually see the difference between a fine quality diamond or one of lesser quality?

Yes, we welcome you to come visit us and we can show you the difference. As a starting point, one characteristic that reflects the quality of a diamond is the colour. The whiter the diamond, the better quality it is. The more flaws there are in a diamond, the lesser the quality. These characteristics impact the quality of the diamond because a better quality stone will appear brighter, clearer and sparkle more.

In Jewelry: When I buy a fine quality watch am I just paying for the name?

This is an understandable question, but the answer is actually no. There are several features of high quality watches that do deliver strong benefits and long term value. Just to give you some examples, if the watch has a sapphire crystal it will be scratch resistant. If the watch has a screw down crown that will make the watch water proof. This is also true if the watch has a screw on back. Another feature that will greatly impact the quality of a watch is whether or not it is made of stainless steel as it will ensure the watch lasts much longer.

In Dental: I brush, floss and rinse with mouth wash, and my gums are still receding. I quit smoking a year ago and now my gums bleed. They never bled when I was smoking. I don't have a lot of money but I'm afraid that I'm going to loose my teeth. What can I do?

First of all you must see a dentist and have your situation addressed. Don't worry too much about the cost. Let the dentist know you are on a tight budget and I'm sure they will be able to work out something affordable for you. To date I have rarely if ever treated anybody with gum disease who was not a smoker or previous smoker. A dentist knows from the minute they see periodontal disease that smoking is involved. So as a previous smoker now is the chance to clear up the damage of the past and begin anew. Congratulations on kicking the habit.

In Dental: I've done root canal on tooth, then had it redone because apparently it was not done right. And now my newest dentist wants is redone the second time... Does that sounds right to you? What should I do?

Up until the re-treatment of the root canal it seems that everything has been tried to save this tooth. At some point a frank discussion should be had regarding what other options you have. It would seem that this is that point. Please keep in mind that I am commenting without seeing a radiograph or having examined the tooth in question, but you do have other options. How much money do you want to spend on one tooth when no one will guarantee you that even with a second re-treatment you will still have this tooth in 5 years? Sometimes treatment options come down to a matter of money. If cost is no object and you want to try every possible treatment to save the tooth then by all means treat it again. If however you want the treatment that has the highest probability for long term success then you should ask specifically whether a second re-treatment will meet this objective or is it a maybe. If the answer is maybe then it is my opinion you should consider other treatment options.

In Dental: My son is 19 and has calcium spots on his front teeth. Will whitening help with this?

Whitening may even out the difference between the white spots and the adjacent tooth areas. There are times though where the white spots whiten further and the effect is white teeth with whiter spots. There are other non invasive treatment also available to help deal with these hyper-calcified areas. One treatment is enamel abrasion. A light buffing of the surface can eliminate the spots that don't go too deep. If none of these things work then you may have to consider some conservative bonding or porcelain veneers.

In Dental: I have a teenage daughter who is still scared to go to dentist, she needs work done (we have dental coverage but can't afford much more then the 80%) We don't know where to take her or what to do? any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

There are many options available today to help apprehensive patients. There is Nitrous Oxide sedation which involves breathing in this gas. The patient becomes lightly to moderately sedated and can then have treatment completed. It's benefit is that it works immediately and also stops working immediately so you leave the office feeling normal. For more extensive work there is oral sedation, administered as a pill. This generally takes time to wear off so adult supervision is required after the appointment as well as a ride home. This form of sedation is slightly deeper than the Nitrous Oxide. Also available are deeper forms of sedation such as Intra-venous and general anesthetic. It is best to seek out a dentist who works with sedation to find out which type would be best for your daughter.

As for dental insurance it is currently illegal for a dentist to accept only the 80% without collecting the 20% co-pay. The reason this is considered to be fraud is that if a dentist bills insurance $100 and they pay 80% or $80 of it and the dentist fails to collect the 20% or $20 then it is assumed that the dentist only meant to be paid $80. Therefore he must have over-billed the insurance company in order to get them to pay 100% of his charge. This is clearly considered fraud as he billed $100 for an $80 procedure. If all he wanted was $80 he should have billed the insurance for $80 and they would have paid 80% of that. The law does not consider his 20% gift to the patient as doing them a favor but as a fraudulent cash grab from the insurance. This is why it may seem like only a couple of dollars to you that the dentist could surely afford to not collect but to the dentist it means the difference between committing a crime or an honest charge.

So be prepared to pay the 20% co-payment. Beyond this there are many ways to deal with financial issues. Once a full exam has been completed the full extent of treatment can be determined and all associated costs. Insurance estimates can then be made so that you clearly understand what will be covered and what won't be. Then a payment plan could be set up to deal with the amounts not covered by insurance. There are always solutions that can be worked out so don't let financial or anxiety concerns interfere with seeking care. The longer you leave the problem the more costly it will become.

At my office we offer both nitrous-oxide and oral sedation and have access to specialists who perform intra-venous and general anesthetics if necessary. We also offer a dental card that allows three months with no interest to pay for all treatment. This allows you to not have to pay out of pocket and to be able to apply insurance payments to your bill once they come in. Longer term low interest payment options are also available if needed.

Your daughter doesn't need to worry and neither should you. There are solutions.

It varies depending on which price range you are looking in. Sellers dominate in the $250,000. and under market. MlS statistics show that there are fewer homes on the market than this time last year.

In Insurance: Is there any set amounts for the opcf 20? I recently had my car totaled, not at fault, the insurance company stopped paying for my rental 24 hours after settlement was agreed on. I was left with paying for the vehicle for 4 days myself (my son worked out of town and needed a vehicle), then I still have no vehicle until my new one is ready. I have not received the cheque from the insurance company as of yet. I will be without settlement cheque or vehicle for at least 5 days before I see the money, possibly longer. I read somewhere that you are covered up to $900.00, some companies it is higher. I don't think it's fair that they can make us take the rental back, before we receive the settlement cheque.

Thanks for your question.
There is no set amount for the OPCF 20. Each insurance company can set their own limits for this coverage. Typically we see somewhere between $900 - $1500. This is a maximum limit that an insurer will pay out under this coverage however, in an effort to reduce the amount of money paid out due to a claim, and to keep insurance premiums as low as possible insurance companies will make efforts to settle a claim as quickly as possible so they do not have to pay up to the policy limit.

Without knowing all of the details surrounding your particular claim it is difficult to make too many comments. However, I agree that on the surface, it is not fair that you would have been forced to return the rental prior to receiving your settlement cheque. I suggest that you speak directly with your independent broker to see if they can help you with this situation. If your broker is not able to help, or if you are not dealing with an independent broker, your contact is likely directly with the insurance company (this is referred to as a direct writer) and you may not get much help because you deal directly with the insurer’s employees rather than an independent advocate who is looking out for your best interests. If you are not able to get to a resolution that you find suitable, you can always contact the insurance company’s ombudsman. The ombudsman is in place to listen to customer complaints and to try to resolve differences.

I hope that this has helped to clarify things for you. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

In Tires: If I buy only two tires, should I put them on the front or the rear?

When you select a pair of replacement tires in the same size and construction as those on the car, we recommend you put them on the rear axle. A single new tire should be paired on the rear axle with the tire having the most tread depth of the other three. When radial tires are used with bias or bias belted tires on the same car (not recommended), the radials must always be placed on the rear axle. Never mix radial and bias-ply tires on the same axle.

In Tires: Can I mix tire types on my car?

Tires of different size designations, constructions, and stages of wear may affect vehicle handling and stability. For best all-around performance, the same type tire should be used on all four wheel positions. It is recommended that you NOT mix radial and non-radial tires on a vehicle. However, if mixing is unavoidable, never mix radial and non-radial tires on the same axle. If two radial and two non-radial are to be installed on a vehicle, the two radials MUST be installed on the rear axle and the two non-radials on the front axle.

In Home Audio Video: What is the difference between Blu-ray, HD DVD and regular DVD players?

Blu-ray and HD DVD are a different format (different discs) than regular DVDs that deliver a far better resolution. You require a different player to play the discs. Fortunately the battle for a winner has been resolved as HD DVD has backed down and will not be made anymore. The Blu-ray player will output 1080P but do not worry if you do not have a 1080P TV, you can certainly appreciate the massive improvement on a regular High Def (720P) TV.

We are very proud at Natural Sound that we are always careful not to sell a product that we feel will not make it in the industry. For example going back over the years, we have never offered for sale Beta VCRs, DAT machines, or HD DVDs. We actually find it rather disturbing that some of the chain stores flooded the market with HD DVD players over the busy Christmas season when it was fairly obvious that it was a dieing commodity and then when business slows in February they announce there sole support for Blu-Ray. Hardly good customer service.

In Home Audio Video: I've heard that some companies are misleading consumers by saying that a receiver has a certain power rating, when it really doesn't. How do I figure this out if I'm looking to buy?

Unfortunately many chain stores try and fool the consumer by stating the power of all channels added together which is sort of like saying the car will go 400 mph as each tire will go 100mph. They also might be using a peak power rating as opposed to the industry standard RMS rating which is more of an appropriate rating for continuous power. Always look for how the power is weighted, in other words, do they state the distortion level and the frequency range that the power is rated at. To be frank, learn more about the receiver before believing what look like great specs for a cheap receiver. At Natural Sound we will always talk frankly about the electronics we carry, we will not mislead a customer to try and sell a piece.

In Home Audio Video: What is the difference between Plasma and LCD?

Plasma and LCD TVs operate on the same basic premise. They are both very slim devices that use light to project through a transparent cellular (pixel) medium with a red, green and blue filter to create colors. Plasma TVs actually use phosphorus like a traditional tube TV to create color. LCD TVs illuminate the panel by installing fluorescent light bulbs behind the LCD lens. The LCD (liquid crystal) acts like a shutter to allow light to pass through where needed and to block the light when black is required. Plasma TVs are not backlit thus each pixel of Plasma can be considered as an individual light bulb. Both technologies have advantages over the other depending on the room application.

In Catering: We are having a family wedding, so there will be lots of kids under the age of 12. Do most caterers have childrens plates or can we choose a different menu option for them?

On your wedding day you want to ensure that all of your guests are happy and enjoy the food. Most caterers will provide children plates, upon request. Ask ahead of time because if a large percentage of guests that are children, this would greatly impact your budget/person. You will also find that most caterers who offer childrens plates are also sensitive to menu options that are age appropriate. This should definitely be a factor in your decision to choose the best caterer for you.

In Carpet and Floring: What is the best way to clean solid hardwood floors with a factory finish. Should a cleaner be used on a weekly basis or simply vacuum and clean less frequently.

When cleaning hardwood flooring, it is important to remember that there is that protective finish on the floor. Cleaning too often with harsh chemical cleaners will result in additional wearing down of that finish, decreasing the lifespan (and often voiding the warrantee) of your hardwood floor. Optimal cleaning strategies include sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush piece of your vacuum, or even using something like Swiffer floor cloths, which gently trap dust and small particles of dirt. Wash floors with a damp cloth for more stubborn areas of dirt. Try and use chemical cleaners only periodically or when absolutely needed. There are products available specifically for hardwood floors, some of which we do carry.

In Carpet and Floring: What is the best way to clean a very expensive laminate floor, the kind with the grooves that collect dirt? Also, can you repair a nail scratch to a laminate floor?

Use a damp cloth to blot up spills as soon as they happen. Never allow liquids to stand on your floor.
Sweep, dust, or vacuum the floor regularly with the hard floor attachment (not the beater bar) to prevent accumulation of dirt and grit that can scratch or dull the floor finish
Periodically clean the floor with cleaning products made specifically for laminate floor care
Do not wash or wet mop the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent, or any other liquid cleaning material. This could cause swelling, warping, delamination, and joint-line separation, and likely void the warranty
Do not use steel wool, abrasive cleaners, or strong ammoniated or chlorinated type cleaners
Do not use any type of buffing or polishing machine
For spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth
Currently we have two laminate cleaners available in our store that we recommend to consumers:

1) HG Laminate Wash and Shine - This product is used for deep cleaning situations. It works by leaving minuscule acrylic balls behind on the flooring surface, resulting in superior protection of the surface against scratching and wear. This product also prevents laminate floors from becoming dull by cleaning and adding shine.

2) Another HG product that is gentle enough for daily use. It removes light areas of dirt from laminate floor in no time.

For both of these cleaners, it is very important to closely follow the directions so that the laminate does not become too wet. Making the floor too wet can lead to joint swelling and eventual warping of the laminate boards. Remember that grooves in any flooring product make it harder to keep clean. Vacuuming and sweeping will help to decrease dirt build-up in these grooves. Dust removal products, such as Swiffer cloths, can be effective in removing lighter particles of dirt and debris.

In terms of repairing damages to the laminate floor, such as a nail scratch, it really depends on how severe the damage is. In Minor scratches or dents can be repaired using a flooring touch-up or colour-fill Kit that can be found at a local hardware store. Touch-up kits typically include a filler material, color coordinated to the color of your floor so that, when used properly, the repaired area is often invisible. The repaired area will hold up to foot traffic and wear just like the rest of your laminate flooring. If the damage is more major and this solution does not work, you may have to remove the damaged plank. We recommend contacting a professional to do this to ensure that the damaged plank is properly removed without damaging surrounding planks and to ensure that the new one is properly installed. This service is available through The Carpet Store's skilled professional flooring installers

In Carpet and Floring: We would like to put a new floor in the front hallway which is also our laundry room but we our undecided what to use Please let us know could sure use some Help

Due to the fact that your front hall acts as a laundry area as well, it is likely a high-traffic area. Vinyl flooring is a good option because it is highly durable, inexpensive and comes in many different colours, patterns and textures. Vinyl cleans easily and is easily installed depending on the style you choose. Floating vinyl floors can be laid down without the use of an adhesive. It is recommended that you have someone install glued-down vinyl in order to get the seeming right. If vinyl is not for you, another good option is ceramic tile. Tile is very durable and comes in many colours and sizes. Overall, it is very low maintenance, particularly in terms of keeping the surface clean. Ceramic tile retains virtually no dirt and can be kept clean with water and a damp cloth or mop. In terms of price, ceramic can be slightly more expensive, but equally as beautiful.

In Carpet and Floring: What would be the best type of flooring for a kitchen? We were thinking of laminate flooring but were told that it may not be the greatest to use because of moisture (spilling/splashing etc.). We have a tight budget so we don't want to spend too much. We do have a friend who lays floors for a living so we can save money there.

When deciding what type of floor to put down, it is important to consider all aspects of installation when calculating cost. If there is already no more than one layer of vinyl and board (subfloor) down, the quickest and cheapest route is to prepare that floor with a levelling compound. Once the floor is level, then either installing a floating or gluing vinyl down on top of it is the best option. Floating vinyl simply sits on top of the existing floor and does not require gluing. Whether you float it or glue it can depend on the size of the job and how many seems there are.

At any rate, vinyl is the most inexpensive option. It cleans well, is very durable, and comes in a vast array of patterns, designs and colours. Typically it is a less labour-intensive installation, as well as less time consuming. However, since you have mentioned that you have an installer friend, that could potentially free up some room in the budget. Both ceramic and certain laminates (with proper preparation and use of silicone to seal the seems) are slightly more expensive alternatives to vinyl.

In Bankruptcy: Do I lose everything if I declare bankruptcy in Ontario?

Ontario law allows a bankrupt to retain:

- Household furniture up to $11,300
-Personal effects up to $5,650
-Tools of the trade up to $11,300
-A vehicle valued up to $5,600
-Certain pensions, life insurance policies and RSPs

This will be discussed in detail at your initial consultation.

What about my credit rating?

Usually, once your level of debt becomes so great that bankruptcy is required, your credit rating is poor in any event. Your ability to obtain and use credit after discharge depends on convincing lenders of your personal financial maturity. Your credit rating can only improve after bankruptcy

In Dental: Are baby teeth important and why do we bother to fix them if they are just going to fall out anyway?

A common thinking process is that since baby teeth are unimportant since they are just going to fall out anyways. The reality is that those first teeth are very important. Not only does your child need them to in order to be able to eat, smile and talk they also are used to hold space for the permanent teeth that will eventually replace them. Premature loss of the first teeth allows adjacent teeth to shift into the spaces creating crowding when the permanent teeth start to come in. Additionally allowing your child to suffer with a bad tooth and then finally going to the dentist to have it pulled, sets your child up for a bad dental experience which can lead to a lifetime of fear. This can lead to a lifetime of dental trouble and eventual loss of their teeth. Regular checkups is the key to prevention.

In Dental: My dentist told me I need a root canal. What is a root canal procedure?

A root canal procedure is a treatment used to clean and disinfect the nerve or pulp tissue from the inside of a tooth if that tissue has become diseased. There are many reasons why this might occur. Decay, trauma, dental work, long term sensitivity, and aggressive clenching are some of the most common causes. When the pulp becomes inflamed and swollen the pressure created can disrupt the blood flow to the tooth resulting in the death of the pulp. Alternatively bacteria from a cavity or advanced periodontal (gum) disease can infect the pulp chamber and cause an abscess. In either case the treatment is called Root Canal Therapy.

A tooth is held into the jawbone by 1-3 roots, depending on the tooth. Inside each root, is an area called the pulp chamber. Once diseased your dentist will have to clean this area, disinfect it and then seal it with a special filling material. This in a nutshell is what is involved in root canal therapy. The root canal procedure is a relatively painless procedure and many patients are relieved when the tooth no longer hurts them anymore. This procedure is also a necessary procedure in order to save the tooth. If an abscessed tooth is left untreated, other dental problems can occur such as bone loss, swelling, and severe toothaches.

In Dental: What can you tell me about Dental Implants?

Implant treatment is one of the most life changing treatments in dentistry. For people who have lost their teeth, implant therapy provides a second chance to take eating and smiling for granted again. For those who have lost even a single tooth, the ability to replace it without damaging adjacent teeth is a modern day miracle. Studies have shown that when implant patients were asked if they had to do it all over again, over 90% said they would.

What are Dental Implants?

Implants are titanium root replacements that are surgically placed into the jaw bone and used for supporting prosthetics. Usually they are shaped like the root of a tooth and placed in bone but implants can also be custom fabricated to fit over the jaw bone.
They are not a new or experimental procedure as hundreds of thousands of implants are placed every year and the procedure has been around for over 30 years.

Can anyone have implants?

There are very few contra-indications to implant placement. They can be placed in elderly people as well as young people. They are indicated wherever a tooth has been lost. If the tooth has been missing for a long time the volume of bone required to place the implant may not be sufficient and reconstructive bone re-growth surgery will also have to be performed.

How long do they last?

The exact longevity will vary from person to person, but most studies show average survival rates in excess of 90% after 15 years.

How much does it cost?

Implant costs vary depending on how many are required and what type of prosthesis they are supporting. Two implants holding down a denture can start as low as approximately $3500- Replacing a single tooth compares favourably to the cost of a porcelain bridge. A custom treatment plan tailored for your specific requirements can only be discussed after a full examination.

In Dental: How can I relieve a toothache?

Many people experience a toothache late in the evening, the middle of the night, or just before they are about to leave on vacation. This is why it is absolutely crucial that you have regular examinations and cleanings so that the toothache can be prevented in the first place. However even with the best of care and intentions toothaches still happen. So what can you do? First of all don’t wait until a small toothache becomes a big one. Call your dentist right away and have it checked out. It is much easier to treat a dental problem when it is diagnosed earlier than later.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where your tooth is hurting and you are not able to see a dentist right away, you can relieve the toothache by placing clove oil on the tooth. Clove oil is available at most pharmacies and is a natural sedative for the nerve in your tooth. You do not need to drown the tooth in clove oil for it to work. All you need to do is take a Q-tip and dip it into the clove oil. Dab the Q-tip on a piece of sterile gauze to get the excess oil off the end. Then place the Q-tip on the tooth and swirl it around the tooth. You should begin to feel some relief. Repeat as necessary.

You will also want to take some over the counter pain reliever, such as extra strength Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Excedrin) at the recommended dosage even if the toothache is not too bad. It is very difficult to get a roaring toothache under control when it is at its peak. By taking the pain medication early, the medicine will work throughout the day and evening to keep the toothache at bay.

If you are away from home and a dentist is not available then it is a good idea to at least call your dentist from wherever you are. Prescriptions can be faxed or phoned in to a pharmacy near to you, even if you are in a foreign country. Most dental infections require treatment with antibiotics and the sooner you get started the faster the toothache will go away.

In Insurance: When you have an accident and your car is a write off, is the insurance company allowed to deduct the deductible off the settlement. I had heard that they were not allowed to do this. When I questioned the insurance company, they said the law has changed. Is this true?

If your vehicle is written off you are responsible for whatever deductible applies to the particular coverage that will cover the loss.

For instance, if you are involved in an accident that is deemed to be your fault as laid out by Fault Determination Charts, then you will be responsible for your Collision deductible. If your car is written off due to vandalism or theft of the entire vehicle, you will be responsible for your Comprehensive deductible. If you are found to be not at fault as laid out by Fault Determination Charts, you will be responsible for your Direct Compensation / Property Damage deductible (which most policies have at $0). In some cases, where the fault is shared by two or more people involved in the accident, you will be responsible for a portion of your deductible depending on which coverages will respond to the claim. The example being if you are found to be 50% at fault and 50% not at fault, you pay half of your Collision deductible and half of your Direct Compensation / Property Damage deductible.

The wording of the Ontario Automobile Policy used to allow for the deductible to be waived if the entire vehicle was stolen (and not recovered) or if damage was due to fire. The wording was changed a number of years ago.

In Insurance: I have been renting for the pass 4 years after my major at fault accident, unable to get insurance because i have bad record. I guess my question are, Does renting a car build insurance record? How many years before they erase your accident record? Any insurance who take client with the bad record?

Renting a vehicle does not show up on your driving record. When we look at a drivers history, we look for the number of convictions (tickets) that they have had in the past three years, as well as their insurance history and any claims that go along with that. If you have been renting vehicles, you have not been listed on an insurance policy and unless you were involved in an accident during that time, there would be no way for a broker to confirm your history.

An accident will affect your insurance premiums for anywhere up to ten years, depending on the company. Each year after the accident, your record will improve and your rates should come down. The number of years since your last accident, together with any convictions and/or license suspensions will help us to determine your rates.

In Ontario, anyone who owns a registered and licensed vehicle, and has a valid drivers license is able to obtain insurance, providing they can afford to pay the premium. The fact that they have a bad record does not preclude them from getting insurance. However, the cost might be too high for them to be able to afford insurance. I would be happy to discuss auto insurance with you and obtain a quote if and when you are looking to insure a vehicle.

In Insurance: I was in an accident, I hit a deer! My insurance company advised me to go through the collision center they deal with! The problems I am having with this is, is that the collision center manager is not informing me of what the damage is and that my involvement is not necessary, he said he will take care of it throught the insurance company. My insurance claimer is only available between 9am- 5pm but I work those hours, so, therefore I have no communication regarding this matter! Can I get a second opinion? Should I be more involved? What happens if the repairs are not to my liking? Can I choose to have a different insurance claimer that is available later in the evening? Can I request O.E. parts only? Do they have to tell me if remanufactured parts are going to be used, and can I stop it?

First of all, the most important question we should be asking is -Are you and everyone else in the car okay? After we establish that you are, we can start worrying about your vehicle.

I think that you should have as much involvement in the settling of your claim as you can. We are talking about your car, and it is important that you are satisfied with whatever solution(s) are reached. I believe that the insurance claimer you are referring to is a Claims Adjuster. They are the trained professionals that deal with these types of situations. An adjuster will work with an appraiser and between them, they will look at your vehicle, appraise what damage there is and implement the necessary steps to either fix the damage or provide you with a settlement based on the fair market value of your car. Without knowing who you are insured with I cannot make a comment on the office hours of your adjuster, but they will typically have access to email or the ability to make after hours appointments so that people in your situation are able to discuss their claims procedures. If you are not happy with your adjuster it may be possible to have your company assign a new one. You would need to speak to a claims manager to pursue that avenue. Your independent insurance broker should be able to provide you with contact information.

Many insurance companies have preferred shops that they recommend. Often, if you use the services of these shops, there will be an extended warranty on the parts and the labour. With any claim situation, you can choose the shop that does the work. If you do not use a recommended shop, you may not receive a guarantee from your insurance company.

I am not 100% sure what you mean when you refer to O.E. parts. If your vehicle is less than 2 years old and has Ontario Policy Change Form #43 or #43(a) ~ Waiver of Depreciation ~ your car should be fixed using new parts from the manufacturer. If your vehicle is older than that, quality aftermarket parts are typically used. Most insurance companies will make sure that their preferred shops are using quality parts. Depending on the age of your car (if it is quite old) there might be no other option but to use refurbished parts, but this is usually a last case scenario and should never compromise the safety of the vehicle. Also, if your vehicle is quite old, it may be very difficult for the shop to match the paint. After repairs, physically, your vehicle should be safe and suffer no negative effects to the performance. However, it may not be possible to make it look brand new or even exactly the way it did prior to your accident.

In Insurance: My question is .. my friend went to work for a cab company and upon walking into the cab office one day, she seen a fax that had come from her previous insurance company noting her accident that she had, approximately 10 years ago and it also stated that she had received a money claim and how much was paid to her on each specific date. I thought that any accident you had was wiped off your record after 6 or 7 years, is it still ok for the insurance company to be providing that information after that time and also, is it Legal for them to inform her employer that she received a settlement and for how much?

You are right in that, for rating purposes, most insurance companies do not consider accidents that are over six or seven years old. However, claims records are kept for a much longer period of time. These records will indicate who was at fault in an accident along with the amount of any payout.

If your friend gave her drivers license information to her employer along with permission to run a check on her driving record and insurance history, then she has nothing to complain about.

In Insurance: I am wondering about something I have heard through friends about comprehensive coverage. What I have been told, if you have coverage on one policy, you do not need it for the others. Example: 2 cars and house policy, you would only need it on one of the three policies. Is this true?

The quickest answer to your question is No, this is not correct. Comprehensive coverage is different when it is part of an Automobile Insurance Policy than it is when it refers to a Homeowners Insurance Policy. The wordings of a Homeowners Policy exclude any coverage for automobiles just as the wordings of an Automobile Policy exclude coverage for property that is not part of the automobile.

On an Automobile Policy, Comprehensive Coverage refers to coverage of an insured vehicle when it is damaged by Fire, Theft, Vandalism or other glass breakage, such as stone chips to a windshield. This coverage is optional, carries an additional premium and has a deductible that is usually $300-$500 but can be higher or lower.

On a Homeowner Policy, Comprehensive refers to the type of policy purchased. A Comprehensive Policy means that any damage is covered by the policy except for certain types that are specifically excluded, such as terrorism or flood damage.

As you can see, if you wish to have the most complete coverage available for your car(s), home and belongings, you will need Comprehensive Coverage on your Homeowner policy as well as each vehicle.

In Insurance: What can an Independant Insurance Broker do for me?

An Independent Insurance Broker is an intermediary that will help you to identify what coverages you need and assist you in setting up insurance policies. A Broker has the ability to protect your home, car and business by placing your policies with different insurance companies according to what coverages and service you require. You will be able to call for unbiased advice regarding coverages, accidents and potential claims. An Independent Insurance Broker can provide information that will enable you to make decisions based on what is best for your unique situation, not what is in the best interest of the insurance company. Your Broker will work for you, not the insurance company.

In Real Estate: What should a buyer not do when buying a home?

5 Common First-Time Home Buyer Mistakes

1. They don't ask enough questions of their lender and end up missing out on the best deal.

2. They don't act quickly enough to make a decision and someone else buys the house.

3. They don't find the right agent who is willing to help and educate them through the home buying process.

4. They don't do enough to make their offer (not necessarily price)look appealing to a seller.

5. They don't think about resale before they buy. The average first-time buyer only stays in a home for four years.

In Tires: The other day I clipped the curb while parking and cracked my wheel and also got a flat tire. I have the spare tire on it now, How long can you drive with the spare on? Also in my area there is currently snow/ice on the ground. Is it less safe to be driving in those conditions with the spare tire on?

Some spare tires are for temporary use only (indicated on the sidewall of the tire) and in this case, although they can safely travel a long distance, they can't be driven over 60 km per hour. Other spare tires are full sized and speed would not be restricted although it may not be a perfest match for the other existing tires. It is always recommended to have a matching set of tires for optimum safety.

In Hearing: What are Some Different Types of Hearing Aids?

There are many styles of hearing aids. The degree of the hearing loss, power and options requirements, manual dexterity abilities, cost factors, and cosmetic concerns are some of the factors that will determine the style the patient will use. The most common styles are:

ITE: In-The-Ear units are probably the most comfortable, the least expensive and the easiest to operate. They are also the largest of the custom made styles.

ITC: In-The-Canal units are a little more expensive than ITEs. They require good dexterity to control the volume wheels and other controls on the faceplate, and they are smaller than ITEs.

MC: Mini-Canals are the size between ITC and CIC. A mini canal is a good choice when you desire the smallest possible hearing aid while still having manual control over the volume wheel and possibly other controls.

CIC: Completely-In-the-Canal units are the tiniest hearing aids made. They usually require a removal string due to their small size and the fact that they fit so deeply into the canal. CICs can be difficult to remove without the pull string. CICs do not usually have manual controls attached to them because they are too small.

BTE: Behind-The-Ear hearing aids are the largest hearing aids and they are very reliable. BTEs have the most circuit options and they can typically have much more power than any of the custom made in the ear units. BTEs are the units that fit on the back of your ear. They are connected to the ear canal via custom-made plastic tubing. The tubing is part of the earmold. The earmold is custom made from an ear impression to perfectly replicate the size and shape of your ear.

In Hearing: Do I Need Two hearing Aids?

Basically, if you have two ears with hearing loss that could benefit from hearing aids, you need two hearing aids. It is important to realize there are no normal animals born with only one ear. Simply stated, you have two ears because you need two ears. If we try to amplify sound in only one ear, you cannot expect to do very well. Even the best hearing aid will sound flat or dull when worn in only one ear. Assuming you have two ears that hear about the same, you can do a little experiment at home to better understand how important binaural hearing is: First, gently close just one ear, by simply pressing the little fleshy part in the front of your ear canal (the tragus) into your ear canal -- a little. Do not apply pressure, do not hurt yourself. Just close the ear canal to eliminate sound from entering the ear. The idea is to close that ear for about ten minutes while you watch TV or listen to the radio, or speak with your spouse. Then, after a full ten minutes, remove your finger. What an amazing difference! Localization (knowing where the sound came from) is only possible with two ears, and just about impossible with one ear. Localization is not just a sound quality issue; it may also be a safety issue. Think about how important it is to know where warning and safety sounds (sirens, screams, babies crying, etc) are coming from. Using both ears together also impacts how well you hear in noise because binaural hearing permits you to selectively attend to the desired signal, while squelching or paying less attention to undesired sounds such as background noise.

In Hearing: What is an Audiologist?

Audiology is the science of hearing. An audiologist is a person who has a masters or doctoral degree in audiology. In addition, the audiologist must be licensed or registered by their state or province to practice audiology. Audiologists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, clinics, universities, rehabilitation facilities, cochlear implant centers, speech and hearing centers, private audiology practices, hearing aid dispensing offices, hearing aid manufacturing facilities, medical centers, as well as otolaryngology (ENT physician) offices. Although the vast majority of hearing problems do not require medical or surgical intervention, audiologists are clinically and academically trained to determine those that do need medical referral. As a licensed healthcare provider, the audiologist appropriately refers patients to physicians when the history, the physical presentation, or the results of the audiometric evaluation (AE) indicate the possibility of a medical or surgical problem. Many audiologists also dispense (sell and service) hearing aids and related assistive listening devices for the telephone, TV and special listening situations.

In Automotive: What is my trade worth?

In order to determine the appropriate value of a trade-in, there are many factors to consider. There are no cut and dry answers to this age old question. Here are a few determining factors that dealers consider when appraising a trade.

Year and kilometers
Condition
Supply and demand
Service history
Damage/Accidents
Rust protection applications
Warranties
Wholesale vs retail pricing
Time of year (sports cars in winter, etc)
Smokers vs non-smokers
Cleanliness
One owner vs multiple owners

These are a few factors when determining trade values. So bottom line is, the better you take care of and service your car, the higher the trade value will be.

In Catering: How should I determine how many staff members are enough, to ensure my guests receive excellent service?

That is a good question. The answer depends on how many guests you intend to invite and what type of menu you choose. As a guide, we recommend that one server be responsible for no more than 24 guests. As you compile your guest list, simply divide the number by 24. Ask your caterer to confirm that they will have at least that number of servers, on top of a bartender.
