Tips of the month

  1. Different Choices for Food Service
Depending on your event, how many guests you are expecting and your budget, you may choose to serve Hors D'oeuvres only or a meal that is buffet, country style or full service/a la carte. Choosing Hors D'oervres will allow you to accomodate an event where people are coming and leaving at different times. It will also make it easier for guests to mingle and socialize. If you want to serve a full meal you have several options too. A buffet will provide several selections within each food group, to help accomodate different tastes. This is a good option if you want to have a couple of choices that are spicy or ethnic. Country style service is when food is brought to each table on platters, but guests serve themselves. This allows guests to eat more of what they like and not waste food they dislike. Full Service or A la Carte is food plated and served to each individual guest. Each guest receives the same food and same serving size. It is recommended that if you choose this option you ensure that food choices are basic and will have mass appeal.

  2. Choosing a Menu -
Are you struggling with how to choose a menu for an event? Food is one of the most important parts of any party or function. To determine a menu there are several factors that you must take into consideration. How many guests are you expecting? Does the venue allow you to have a sit down meal or would it be best to serve appetizers? Is the kitchen space conducive to your plans? Have you determined whether or not any of your guests have dietary requirements? What is your budget? Once you have the answers to these questions it is recommended that you work with a caterer that has experience and can provide you with options that meet your needs. Ensure that your event is a success by planning in advance!

  3. Trying to stay within a budget? If you are torn between the size of your guest list and the cost of serving the dinner, here are a couple of tips that may help you. Choose 1 meat option as opposed to 2, ask about buffet pricing, serve chicken as opposed to prime rib. The menu options you choose along with the type of service you decide upon will help you manage the price/person. Another option is to invite family only for the dinner and then invite friends for the reception.

Most recently answered questions

We are having a family wedding, so there will be lots of kids under the age of 12. Do most caterers have childrens plates or can we choose a different menu option for them?

On your wedding day you want to ensure that all of your guests are happy and enjoy the food. Most caterers will provide children plates, upon request. Ask ahead of time because if a large percentage of guests that are children, this would greatly impact your budget/person. You will also find that most caterers who offer childrens plates are also sensitive to menu options that are age appropriate. This should definitely be a factor in your decision to choose the best caterer for you.

Do most caterers include the same services in the initial price? What should I be asking to ensure I am comparing apples to apples?

Each caterer may vary slightly in the services that are provided in the initial price/person. Some things to clarify to ensure you are comparing apples to apples are; dishware, cutlery, glassware, linen, set-up of reception, bartender etc.

How should I determine how many staff members are enough, to ensure my guests receive excellent service?

That is a good question. The answer depends on how many guests you intend to invite and what type of menu you choose. As a guide, we recommend that one server be responsible for no more than 24 guests. As you compile your guest list, simply divide the number by 24. Ask your caterer to confirm that they will have at least that number of servers, on top of a bartender.
